Why Comedians Are Winning (and Magicians Are… Still Shuffling the Deck)

Let me start with a disclaimer: this is just my opinion. And it’s only part of the problem.

But here it is.

Comedians are blowing up right now.

Magicians? Not so much.

Why?

Because comedians lead with their humanity.

They walk on stage and immediately say something like:

“Hey… I’m a mess. Let me tell you about my life.”

And the audience instantly goes:

“Oh good… me too.”

Connection.

Meanwhile, many magicians walk on stage like this:

“Behold… I possess mysterious powers.”

Cool.

But the audience didn’t come to connect with a wizard.

They came to connect with a human being.

And that’s where a lot of magicians lose the room.

Too many lead with the skill.

Too many lead with the secret.

Too many lead with the method disguised as a miracle worker.

But audiences don’t remember tricks.

They remember people.

That’s why comedians thrive.

You know who they are.

You know their struggles.

You know their personality.

You feel like you’ve met them.

A great book that dives into this idea is

One of the major pillars of that book is simple but powerful:

Express your humanity.

Because magic isn’t about proving you’re special.

It’s about sharing something human.

When audiences connect with you, the magic becomes unforgettable.

When they don’t?

Well… it just becomes another card trick.

So here’s my call to action for magicians:

Stop letting the trick tell the audience who you are.

Instead…

Show them who you are, and let the magic support that story.

Because the real secret to unforgettable magic isn’t sleight of hand.

It’s heart.
