The Real Magic Was the Friendship: Our Sweet Deceit Experience on Food Network

Sometimes, the most magical moments in life have absolutely nothing to do with magic tricks.
On October 19, 2026, I had the incredible honor of appearing on Food Network’s Sweet Deceit, alongside two wonderful friends and fellow magicians, Julia Dryas and Jack Murdock.
And as if being on national television wasn’t exciting enough, we got to film our episode at a place that’s very special to all three of us: the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood!
What an experience!
But looking back, what I’ll remember most isn’t the cameras, the competition, or even the prize money.
It’s the friendship, the laughter, and the people who made this experience unforgettable.
Three Magicians, One Sweet Adventure
When you put three professional magicians together in the Magic Castle, you’d probably expect us to know a thing or two about deception.
After all, fooling people is literally what we do for a living!
But this time, the tables were turned.
Hosted by the incredibly entertaining Josh Peck, Sweet Deceit challenges contestants to identify hyperrealistic cakes cleverly disguised as everyday objects.
Our mission? Find six hidden sweets throughout the Magic Castle.
Sounds simple enough, right?
Well, let’s just say we discovered that magicians aren’t nearly as difficult to fool as we thought!
And the person responsible for keeping us guessing was an extraordinarily talented cake artist named April Julian.
Meet My Amazing Teammates
One of the greatest blessings of being part of the magic community is the friendships we develop along the way.
I couldn’t have asked for two better people to share this experience with.
Julia Dryas: Bringing Butterflies and Wonder to Magic 🦋
Julia is a wonderful magician whose passion for the art began when she was just six years old.
Through her involvement with the Magic Castle’s Junior Program and Jeff McBride’s Magic & Mystery School, Julia developed her own beautiful style of performing.
She’s even known as the “Butterfly Girl” because of her love for incorporating butterflies into her magic.
What I admire about Julia is her genuine desire to bring happiness and wonder to others.
Her creativity and passion for magic are inspiring, and I’m grateful I got to share this experience with her.

Jack Murdock: A True Professional and Wonderful Friend 🪄
Jack Murdock is an incredibly talented Southern California magician specializing in close-up magic and interactive parlor performances.
He’s been part of the Magic Castle community since 2009 and has spent years sharing his love of magic with audiences around the world.
Jack brings an infectious enthusiasm to what he does, and he’s the kind of person who makes any experience more enjoyable.
Having him as a teammate made the adventure that much more memorable.

The Magician Who Fooled the Magicians 🎂
Of course, we can’t talk about our experience without giving a HUGE shout-out to the amazingly talented April Julian!
April is a renowned cake artist specializing in hyperrealistic illusion cakes.
She’s appeared on Netflix’s Is It Cake? and has built an incredible career transforming everyday objects into edible works of art.
And let me tell you, her creations are absolutely MIND-BLOWING!
As magicians, we’re trained to pay attention to details, question what we see, and look for things that don’t quite belong.
But April?
She had us second-guessing EVERYTHING!
There were moments when we were completely convinced we knew what was real and what wasn’t.
Spoiler alert: We didn’t always know!
April reminded me of something I love about magic.
It doesn’t matter how much experience you have. There’s always someone out there who can make you feel that childlike sense of wonder again.
And April certainly did that for us.
Thank you, April, for sharing your extraordinary talent and reminding three magicians what it feels like to be completely fooled!

SPOILER ALERT: Did We Win? 💰
If you haven’t watched our episode yet, consider this your official spoiler warning!
Ready?
WE WON $5,500! 🎉
Was it the full $12,000?
Nope!
Did April fool us more than once?
ABSOLUTELY!
But you know what?
We had an incredible time, shared plenty of laughs, and walked away with some wonderful memories.
And $5,500 wasn’t too bad either!
Although I think April deserves an award for successfully fooling three professional magicians on national television!
Behind the Cameras, Beyond the Magic
There’s something surreal about seeing yourself on television, especially when the setting is a place that has played such an important role in your journey as a magician.
The Magic Castle isn’t just a venue to me.
It’s a community.
It’s where I’ve developed friendships, learned from incredible performers, grown as an artist, and experienced some of the most meaningful moments of my career.
To have the opportunity to film a national television show there, alongside two friends who share that same love for magic, was truly special.
And getting to watch the episode premiere while receiving messages, encouragement, and love from friends and family made it even more meaningful.
Thank You for Being Part of the Magic 💜
I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude.
To Food Network, the production team, Josh Peck, April Julian, and everyone who helped bring Sweet Deceit to life, THANK YOU!
To my teammates, Julia and Jack, thank you for the laughter, the friendship, and for making this adventure one I’ll never forget.
To the Magic Castle and our wonderful magic community, thank you for continuing to provide a place where creativity, friendship, and wonder come together.
And finally, to my family, friends, clients, and everyone who tuned in, shared the news, sent a message, or cheered us on:
THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!
Your love and support mean more than you’ll ever know.
When I first fell in love with magic as a kid, I never imagined the places it would take me or the incredible people I’d meet along the way.
And experiences like this remind me how blessed I am to do what I love.
The Greatest Magic Isn’t What We Do. It’s Who We Share It With.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned throughout my journey as a magician, it’s that the most memorable moments aren’t necessarily about the tricks we perform or the applause we receive.
They’re about connection.
They’re about friendship.
They’re about sharing laughter, creating memories, and making people feel something special.
Yes, we appeared on Food Network.
Yes, we won some money.
And yes, we got fooled by CAKE!
But the real magic was getting to share the experience with people I genuinely care about.
And that’s a memory worth far more than any prize.
With a grateful heart,
Jonathan Molo 💜🪄
