Where Does the Next Generation of Magicians Come From?

Why Magic Clubs Matter More Than Ever
Behind so many great magicians is something just as important as the magic itself… a community.
For generations, magic clubs like the International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM) and its local chapters, known as Rings, have brought people together to learn, share and grow.
More Than Just a Magic Club
A magic club isn't just a place where magicians get together to show each other tricks. It's where friendships are made, ideas are exchanged, and people of all ages and experience levels find something in common.
It's where a beginner can learn from someone who has been performing for 40 years, a young magician can find encouragement, and a professional can reconnect with what made them fall in love with magic in the first place.
While YouTube and social media have made learning magic easier than ever, there's something you just can't get from watching a video.
You can't replace the relationships, encouragement, and opportunities that come from being part of a community.
The Power of Mentorship
I've had the privilege of watching this firsthand through our own magic club, IBM Ring 254.
Our son Uriah who has been mentored by Jonathan, has also been fortunate to have an entire community of magicians who have influenced him along the way.
Chazz, Old Jasper, Julia, Steve and so many other members of Ring 254 have inspired him in different ways. Each brings their own personality, creativity, and experience to the table.
One of our newest magicians, Starlight, who is only 9 years old has a love for performing!
Starlight has been mentored by Julia Dryas and watching that development has been one of my favorite examples of why these clubs matter.
I remember sitting at a meeting and watching Starlight pull out her notebook and start taking notes, just like Julia does. It was the cutest and such a proud moment, I had to grab a picture to show Julia.
This went beyond just magic tricks. She was picking up on the habits and dedication of someone she admired.
Our club was sponsoring an event for the Highland Senior Center, and we were asking for volunteers to perform strolling magic.
Starlight confidently raised her hand.
Our club president, Chazz looked at her and said, "You want to perform? Then you'll perform too, because you're part of the club."
I absolutely loved that.
There was no hesitation about her age or the fact that this would be her first time performing strolling magic. She was part of the club, and that meant she deserved the same opportunity as everyone else.
Think about how powerful that moment was for her.
Not only did she have the confidence to raise her hand, but she was surrounded by people who believed in her and were willing to give her a chance.
There's Room for Everyone
Let's face it, magic can sometimes be a competitive world. But one of the things I appreciate about magic clubs is that they remind us we're all part of something bigger.
Someone else's success doesn't take away from yours. When we support each other, we make the entire magic community stronger.
And you don't have to be a professional magician to belong. I don’t perform, I’m a hobbyist and I love magic. They embrace me and teach me every time we meet.
Maybe you've always loved magic but never knew where to start. Maybe you're a hobbyist like me, or maybe you have a child who can't stop talking about magic.
There's a place for you.
And as club members, I think it's our responsibility to make sure new people feel that way.
The Future of Magic Starts With Us
Magic has survived for centuries because people have continued to pass it along. The techniques, history, and traditions have been shared from one generation to the next.
And while the internet has changed how people learn, I don't believe it can replace the relationships built through local clubs.
But here's the thing: our clubs can only continue to thrive if we participate.
That means showing up, supporting events, sharing our knowledge, welcoming new members, and making room for the next generation.
If you're already part of a magic club, when was the last time you invited someone new? Encouraged a young magician? Or simply made someone feel welcome?
And if you've never attended a meeting, maybe now is the time!
Find your local International Brotherhood of Magicians Ring. Attend a meeting. Introduce yourself. Bring your curiosity.
Because here's what I've come to realize.
The next generation of magicians isn't something we need to wait for. They're already here.
So let's continue to support our local magic clubs, encourage new faces, and hold that door open for the next generation.
Because the greatest magic we can create might just be the inspiration we leave behind.
